Review of Dungeon Quest—To Play or Not to Play, That’s THE question.

If you enjoy role-play game (RPG), this one may be your cup of tea. But I have to say MAYBE.

I started to play this game half a year ago, but I am still as confused how to get a upper hand against the opponents in the game as the first time I played it. I am confident to say that I am no green-hand with my ~ 20 years of game experience. Not another game has puzzled me as much.

Well, the game design is quite simple. You can choose your characters’ species from Mercenary (more gold), Barbarian (more strength), Fighter (more health) or Warrior (more stamina). You can then go into the fantasy world of the game to perform two activities: quest vs fight.

In quest, you are presented with various levels of quest challenges based on the level of your character. In addition, the quests have other prerequisites usually, including possession of certain weapons, vehicles and party size. The tougher the preconditions are, the more rewards you will get—in forms of experience scores and gold, and drops of loot items (e.g. weapons) with a certain probability.

To buy weapons, you need gold, and sometimes, even gem.

What is gem? Gem is one of the most valuable and useful items in the game. You are awarded 20 gems at the very beginning of the game. However, they can be spent in many ways and be gone within a few seconds. For example, to heal your wound or to replenish your strength so that you can fight other opponents or to gain stamina to go for a quest, you need to give the Oracle 2 gems each time, or you can use gems to obtain weapons, and the top weapons for a level can only be purchased by gems, not gold.

The only way to get more gems is to buy from the evil Oracle. Why do I say she is evil (assume it’s a she like in the Matrix)? That is because she increases the price of gems using a rate close to the power law! The price for the first gem is $1000, and the second would be $2000, and soon you will find that the 10th will cost you over a million! The money doesn’t come by so easily in the game.

That is the first puzzle I have about the game – how can we afford the gems with such a pricing! And I am sure you agree with me now She is EVIL.

Now let’s forget about gems for a second. The request for party size was another challenge for me as well (not any more as I will tell you in a moment). At the beginning of the game you have a party size of two, you and the bot the game awards you. From the help menu of the game, it’s obvious that one can buy additional party bot from the evil oracle to increase the party size. However, soon I realized that this was not going to work, as the quests that awards a couple of thousand gold would need party size more than 5. Fortunately, there is google. I found out that I can look for many other players’ id numbers online for free and add them to your party list to increase you party size at no cost. So I cut out the middle-man here and saved me some bucks.

But this is not the end of my headache. As I progress in the game, I start to notice that fighting other opponents from the game list is a shortcut to make me rich – if I win. There is a very clear explanation as to how the victory of the fight is judged. It depends on the attack and defense of your character, plus power of your weapons and vehicles, and plus that of your party member. The explanation specifically emphasizes that you should get A weapon and vehicle for each of your party member so they would count more favorably in the game.

That sounds good, so every time when I go up a level in the game, I spend most or all my awarded points to increase my attack and defense. I also try to be a good party leader. I buy the best equipment for each of my party members as well. I won a few and was quite satisfied with the looted god.

I quit the game, and went to bed. But not the game. My name is still online available to accept challenges from other players even when you are not playing. But I thought I would be invincible now.

I was wrong. The next day when I started the game, I got such notices:

“You were attacked by skywalker at 1:30 am and you lost, you lost $5,977(10% of my god every time I lose a fight)”

“You were attacked by skywalker at 1:30 am and you lost, you lost $5,524″

“You were attacked by skywalker at 1:31 am and you died, you lost $3,764″

Thank God my health ran out before I got bankrupted.

I am puzzled again. Where is the problem?

The problem is the party member! I found that another 80 unknown IDs appeared on my party list without my knowledge in a night! This means the majortity of my partners were fighting with me NAKED in the game and they were dragging me down.

How could it happen? I only added a couple IDs and I did not publicize my ID by NO means! The worse thing is, there is no way that I could delete these unwelcome friends from my list. What made things even worse was the anonymous unwelcome friends were keeping flooding in and there was no setting in the game to deny these uninvited friends.

There is no way I would be able to afford to equip such an ever-increasing army. Somehow, I was not so worried, maybe other players also facing the same problems as I do?

I was wrong again. I found my fight loss increases day by day, and most of the time the challengers killed me with a single strike without being hurt much at all. They have to have a full-equipped army! How could they do that?

Such powerful challengers start to pay more and more visits to me as they find fighting with me is quite lucrative!

Soon I could not make my ends meet in the game and I had to have my ID suicided.

I did not give up there, and I started a new ID from level one, and changed my strategy. But the same thing happened again, and again.

And here I am, level 3, after half a year of playing the game, still confused with the underlying mechanism of the game, confused with the basic question:

Should I be a Mercenary , or a barbarian?

should I increase my attack, or defense?

should I …

Should I still play the game? or Should I recommend the game? Nobody likes to play and lose.

En, I will let you know when I conquer the game one day!
