BusinessWeek reports that Apple is stepping into the Verizon-AT&T spat with two new ads to be released tonight touting the iPhone’s ability to handle voice and data connections simultaneously via 3G. That ability has been featured as one of AT&T’s talking points to differentiate itself from Verizon’s 3G network in an attempt to counter Verizon’s ads attacking AT&T’s 3G network coverage.

The ads can’t help but be viewed against the backdrop of the fight between Verizon Wireless and Apple’s partner AT&T, the one that’s spawned a lawsuit for Verizon’s “There’s A Map For That” TV spots. Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once.

AT&T filed suit earlier this month over what it calls “blatantly false and misleading” advertising messages from Verizon, but Verizon quickly refuted the charges, noting pithily that “the truth hurts.” A federal judge has denied AT&T’s request for a temporary restraining order preventing Verizon’s ads from being shown, but the full case will proceed beginning December 16th.

Here are this week’s iPhone-related news, videos, tricks and tips.

1. GPush Brings Push GMail to iPhone(from iPhonemofo.net)

The GPush application is very simple for the user and all the user has to do is enter their GMail username and password. Once that is complete then they never really need to look at the99 cent application again (unless wanting to log in as a different GMail user).

3. Best New iPhone Apps by BusinessWeek(2)(from iPhonemofo.net)

A series of new apps rewarded as the best ones by BusinessWeek. It includes social networking apps, lifestyle apps, navigation apps, news apps, medical apps, utilities apps and productivity apps.

4. New Apple iPhone Patent Applications Surface: Object and Facial Recognition, Messaging, Voice Modulation(from MacRumors)

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published several dozen Apple patent applications this morning, and Unwired View highlights one group of them primarily related to iPhone software. The patents cover object and facial recognition, messaging, and voice modulation.

5. iPhone 3GS Upstream Transfers Limited to 384 Kbps(from MacRumors)

Macworld reports that while the iPhone 3GS does support the improved 7.2 Mbps download transfer speed now currently being deployed in the U.S. by AT&T and already available in other parts of the world, it will not support the correspondingly improved upload transfer speeds of 1.4 or 1.9 Mbps generally available on such networks and will be limited to the same 384 Kbps upload speed available on the iPhone 3G.

6. 16 GB White iPhone 3GS Stocks Run Low in Apple Retail Stores(from MacRumors)

Apple retail store stocks of the 16 GB white iPhone 3GS model have fallen precipitously low early this week. At present, only 10% of Apple’s over 200 retail stores have the model currently in stock.

7. U.S. Department of Justice Reviewing Wireless Carrier Exclusivity Agreements(from MacRumors)

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a preliminary inquiry into potential anti-competitive practices by the country’s largest wireless carriers. One of the major issues being investigated is the existence of handset exclusivity contracts such as that between AT&T and Apple for the iPhone.

A half dozen new patent filings published this week from Apple detail various advancements that could find their way into future iPhones, such as a new “ID App” for identifying objects in a user’s surroundings, an interface for managing outgoing voicemails, a method by which customers could receive new iPhones and iPod touches pre-populated with apps and media items they select, and more.

9. Apple launches HTTP Live Streaming standard in iPhone 3.0(from AppleInsider)

One of the more overlooked features of the new iPhone 3.0 is support for a new open standard for live video streaming over HTTP, which promises to open up standards-based video broadcasting to a wide audience while giving mobile users an optimized picture as they roam between WiFi and mobile networks.

10. Nearly half of prospective smartphone buyers to choose iPhone(from AppleInsider)

Even amid turbulent times, smartphone adoption continues to rise, with a new study revealing that nearly half of those consumers who plan to make a new smartphone purchase in the next three months will buy an iPhone.

11. App Review: IM+ with Push for iPhone(from The iPhone Blog)

IM+ is an IM client with push notification support for 10 networks, including Twitter. I use AIM, Facebook, and Twitter, so these are the only networks that influence this review.

Recently, BusinessWeek listed out a number of latest and best iphone apps. The following are about the top games.

1. Star Defense

Players use this app just $5.99 to build towers to defend their planet from hordes of aliens. And with in-game-purchasing capability, they can ante up for further onslaughts. Two new challenge planets are now available. These planets have unique scenarios separate from the campaign missions.

2. Leaf Trombone: World Stage

Leaf Trombone players blow into the microphone of their iPhone and work their fingers to produce melodies. In the new game, they can find other players over a Wi-Fi or 3G network who want to play a duet. It is now available at $0.99.

3. Flick Fishing

Flick Fishing lets iPhone game players cast their line and reel in fish with a snapping wrist motion. And now with iPhone 3.0’s in-game buying tool, users who tire of the game’s existing locales can purchase new ponds to cast their bait. It is on sale for $0.99.

4. Enigmo

After you figure out how to steer droplets of water through the first 50 levels of puzzle game Enigmo, you can now buy additional levels thanks to the in-app purchasing feature newly available to developers. $2.99 will provide you much fan.

5. Bomberman Touch 2: Volcano Party
